Appendix T2 Response
to Personal Cryogen Exposure |

This appendix describes how to recognize and appropriately respond in the event of personal ex posure to cryogenic material.
The process steps for this
procedure are performed in coordination with ES&H Manual Chapter 6550
Cryogenic Safety Program.

NOTE: Emergencies related to oxygen
deficiency hazards are discussed in ES&H Manual Chapter
6540 Appendix T3 ODH Emergency Procedures. Emergency response for other situations are discussed in ES&H Manual Chapter 3510 Emergency Response Activities. |
NOTE: Management authority may be delegated at the discretion of the responsible manager.
3.1
Everyone
at Jefferson Lab
· Respond to personal exposures and spills per this appendix.
3.2
Supervisor/Subcontracting
Officer’s Technical Representative (SOTR)/Sponsor
· Report an actual event or near-miss to the ESH&Q Reporting Officer in accordance with ES&H Manual Chapter 5200 Event Investigation and Causal Analysis Process.
4.1
Response
to Personal Exposure
Individuals involved in an incident which results in exposure to skin:
Step 1:
Remove contaminated material that is not
stuck to the skin, if it can be removed easily without causing further
damage.

Protect
your hand (and any other exposed skin.)
·
Gently
remove the item from the affected area.
·
Place the contaminated material aside in an open
area to allow the cryogen to evaporate.

NOTE: Avoid aggravating the injury: ·
Do
not rub or massage the affected body part, nor apply any medications. ·
Do
not exercise frostbitten feet, hands or arms. |
Step 2:
Seek Medical Attention (in accordance with ES&H Manual Chapter
6800 Appendix T2 Injuries and Illnesses Requiring First Aid or Emergency
Medical Response)

Step 3:
Cover:
the affected body part with a clean, dry dressing.
Step 4:
Warmth: Keep the exposed individual
warm.
Step 5:
Evacuate: the area if necessary.
Step 6:
Notify: your
Supervisor/SOTR/Sponsor as soon as possible.
