JLab Building Access System Gets Upgrade- A message from JLab

This message is being sent on behalf of the Facilities Management and Logistics department.

To All Jefferson Lab ID Badge Holders:

After years in service, the system that controls access to all Jefferson Lab facilities and controlled-access areas will be updated beginning Thursday, June 23, 2011.

The installation is scheduled to be completed in mid-August.

Your current Jefferson Lab ID badge will continue to function with the new system.

Known as the Central Alarm Notification System, or CANS, the system provides each member of the Jefferson Lab community with a badge that ties together access control, safety and training. The system also integrates with fire alarm systems and video surveillance.

The new system will be rolled out one building, one section of a building, or one area at a time. A building or area will experience an outage in CANS when it is being updated.

Signs will be posted to direct you to working access points when an installation is underway in a given building or area.

If a fire alarm is activated during the changeover, the doors will function as they normally would function - all doors could be used to exit.

Once installation is completed, the only visible change will be new card reader or "swipe" boxes. To gain access to a building or controlled-access area, you will continue to swipe your badge over the box.

The new system is designed to provide enhanced safety of individuals and security of facilities, while being easier to maintain and allowing for future upgrades.

For concerns or problems, contact Dave Kausch, the project SOTR.

The anticipated schedule for installation is as follows:
