More on BCAL segmentation

Hi Elton:

The exercise on the effects of segmentation on timing resolution was an
interesting feedback. Coupled with the momentum resolution simulations,
one has to question the fine segmentation we have been pursuing so far.
However, one aspect that has not been considered in any simulation so
far is the effect of non-linearity that we may get with coarser
segmentation. We have already seen such an effect after the Hall-B beam
tests, when we have 4.5% non-linearity with a photon dynamic range of
only a factor of three or so. KLOE also has shown non-linearity in
their papers. If we use PMT's and drive them hard to collect a low
number of photoelectrons from MIP's at large angles and at the same time
we may have the case where a couple of hundred of photoelectrons are
read out by the same PMT for higher energy photons at small angles.
Linearity will suffer. I think this effect should be considered as well
to be bale to reach a better picture.

Cheers,

George
