JLab Weekly Software Meeting minutes

Hi All,

Here are some minutes that I tried to take at the first
weekly Hall-D Software meeting at JLab. Some things went flying by a
little faster than I could type so there were definitely a LOT more
things discussed than are listed here.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Attendees: Simon Taylor, Paul Eugenio, Elliot Wolin, Ed Brash,
David Lawrence, Richard Jones(by phone)

1. Unforseen problems with the phones prevented us from conferencing
in more than one person at time. Hence, we were unable to include
Ryan Mitchell this week.

2. David Lawrence reported on his recent study of make systems.
Ed Asked if he could present this at the upcoming collaboration
meeting.

3. What software is needed? Java vs. C/C++.

4. R.J. Asked about version control. He suggested EW write a short
document on BitKeeper vs. CVS. EW will give a short presentation
at the collaboration meeting.

5. HDFast compile/linking problems with RHEL3: PE- problems
occur with using non F90 compliant compiler. He is exploring
using the Intel compiler.

DL & EB: We've compiled HDFast on RHEL3 and Mandrake9.2. It required
a few fixes including using MCFast5.2

RC: There is a version of MCFast5.0 in the CVS repository along
with all other required outside packages. Should we make a CVS branch?

EW: Bitkeeper handles "branches" easier.

RJ: Reduce complexity of rc file and move this into Makefiles?

EB: No trace information?
PE: The trace information was accessed by looking through
the guts of MCFast. This, though has been in a state of flux
so it will need to be checked in 5.2 to make sure we can still
access it in the same way.
RJ: Why not stick with an older version?
PE: I believe significant physics improvements have been made.

6. Looking over
http://www.curtismeyer.com/cgi-bin/enote112.pl?nb=curtisbook&action=view&page=17
Several items from this web page were briefly discussed.

7. What items should be included in simulation? Rails, CF cylinders,...?

8. EB: Geometry and event formats:
RJ described a concept for the dataflow. Some discussion followed.
