The two items below came in this morning - PhysicsWeb Summaries.  The
first item is from  Hamamatsu - the second - an interesting news item.
I'm sure many know the Hamamatsu material - but just in case....

Photon Counting with Silicon APD
Hamamatsu Photonics introduce the new multi-pixel photon counter 
(MPPC), the S10362-11 series, for photon counting applications. The 
device features brand new technology utilizing a Geiger-mode 
avalanche photodiode structure for ultra-low-level light detection 
and is supplied in a compact 5 mm package.

   US chooses site for underground lab (Jul 11)

      The US National Science Foundation (NSF) has ended years of uncertainty
    and finally decided on the former Homestake gold mine in South Dakota as
    the site of a huge new underground laboratory for physics and other
    sciences. Shielded by up to 2000m of rock, the lab will be an ideal
    location for experiments that require screening from cosmic rays and
    other background radiation, such as those studying neutrinos or proton
    decay. The NSF chose Homestake from a shortlist of four candidate sites.
