I agree with George that this is important for SiPM setup.  In the 
tagger microscope preamp, we have designed it to be bank-switchable 
between two gain settings: high-gain mode (single pe peaks resolvable) 
and low-gain mode, for regular operation.  The dynamic range of the ADC 
is simply not sufficient to cover both of these ranges and still keep 
the overflows to a low rate.  The two settings have different 
requirements, eg. we only require ultimate timing on the low-gain mode, 
and can live with slower signals in high-gain mode for setup.
