Phone conference with SensL

Attending: JLab: Elton, Eugene; UofR: Zisis, George, SensL: Carl, Padraig,
Stephen, USM: Will.

We had a phone conference this morning to discuss the options toward
refining the use of SiPMs for the readout of the BCAL. The conference was
in preparation for Carl's visit on Tuesday to JLab. Here are a few notes I
took during the phone conference. Comments and corrections are welcome.

o Carl reviewed the status of their new ceramic package. First packages
are currently in manufacturing. Expect prototype builds available in June.
Should be consistent with our cooling concept. SensL will be able to
provide units with the A35 micron Getter#1 devices in June. The
electronics package will also be available on that timeframe.
- SensL will prepare pricing information for 5, 10 and 20 units for our
meeting next Tuesday.
- Pricing will be for the SPM arrays with the electronics as an option.
- Best estimates availability for units will be made.
- Availability options for silicon with different micro-cell sizes
(e.g. A20H, A35H, etc) will be checked.
- Mechanical prototypes can be made available soon for help in developing
the cooling concepts and assembly onto BCAL.
- Customization of electronics boards will be necessary to fit into the
BCAL geometry. Electronic mods can be used to taylor packaging to Hall D
needs.

o Eugene inquired about the radiation hardness of the sensors.
- SensL has information as well as references that they will provide to
us.

o George emphasized that measurements of PDE and DR (determined at low
light levels) need additional gain in the amplifier. This may require
two different amplification factors for dual use of SiPMs.
- JLab is requested to come up with a specification for the electronics,
including needed amplification. It is likely that two sets of
amplification will be needed for testing at the single p.e. level as well
as in response to high light levels. George and Zisis, in consultation
with Carl Zorn, will provide input on the required amplification needed.

Next Tuesday: Hall D Ground Breaking at 11:00 am. Carl meets with Elton
and Eugene at 1:00 in Eugene's office.

HI Padraig,

It might be useful to have an outline of discussion points for the
conference call. Since you requested the phone conference, you may have
your own list of talking points.

o Update on next generation SiPMs (SensL)
o Status of bcal readout options (JLab)
- reliability of production units
- cooling
- testing of new SiPM package
o How to proceed from this point (discussion)

We probably do not want to spend much time on technical details. But I
have attached a preliminary concept we are developing for cooling the
siPMs at the end of the BCAL. The purpose of this study is to help
estimate the feasibility and difficulty of implementing the bcal readout
using cooled SiPMs.

Talk to you at 11, our time. Elton.
