Hall D use of computing farms

Hi,

I talked with Ian and Chip about Hall D use of computing farms (production farms
and alpha farms, respectively). The current concern is speeding up Pavel's
radiation dose calculations...so far he has not been using the farms.

Chip agreed to allow Pavel to perform benchmark testing of his Geant3 code on
the alpha farms, and to use any free cycles. The alpha farms are currently
dedicated to lattice QCD.

Ian explained that all users are allowed to use the production farms, but there
would have to be an official request from Hall D to use more than a small number
of nodes. Pavel will also benchmark his code on the production farms.

Our next step depends on the benchmark results, and on our estimate (Elton,
Pavel, and I meet on Mon to get started on this) of what needs to be done and
how long it would take on the different farms. We might be able to get priority
on the alpha farms, if the Director's Council agrees. We might be able to get
more nodes on the production farms (not sure who decides this...probably Ian).
We might be able to get a little of both. Perhaps what we can get now is
enough.

				Sincerely,
					Elliott
