Re: Tagger area

Tim,

Item 2 is about detector and electronics "survival" in terms of ability to handle the rates and occupancies.  You are interested in radiation damage to electronics located in different spots.  I think Pavel's rates would be directly useful in determining electronics lifetime-exposure levels.  As I recall, anywhere in the tagger hall more than a couple meters away from the electron beam pipe is completely safe as far as electronics exposure is concerned, but this should be verified with Pavel.

Hi Richard,

What I am trying to get going is dose during beam operations to determine what equipment can survive where. Would this then fall under you (item 2)?

Tim,

I suggest the following division of labor as regards radiation levels in the experimental halls.  This proposal applies both to the tagger area, the collimator cave and the main Hall D area.
  1. Caretaker of the geometry: boundary definition, materials, beam spectrum and intensity profile, and magnetic field maps.
  2. Detector backgrounds simulator: Monte Carlo simulation of what background rates in detectors are, as a result of beam being present in the hall.  This includes tagging elements, active collimator and supplementary photon beam profile monitor, pair spectrometer, total absorption counter, as well as GlueX spectrometer detectors, based on the reference geometry.
  3. Radiation dose (ie. personnel safety) simulator: calculations of the total radiation levels in all areas foreseen for personnel access, based on the reference geometry.
The way I see it, item 3 is clearly the domain of RadCon.  I believe that this is laboratory policy.  Up until now, items 1 and 2 have been my responsibility.  I have worked well with Pavel (RadCon) up until now in passing him the geometry he needs to perform his functions.  If everyone is amenable, I suggest that we continue to work this way.

I think the dose map you are asking about falls under the responsibility of item 3 in the above list.  I am prepared to pass the latest geometry to RadCon for either the tagger or collimator cave to enable them to produce this map.
