Re: FCAL test

Elke and all,

We have a van de graf 2.x MeV electron machine here at UConn that is capable of a few microamps of current.  When we spoke about that, I was thinking of doing diamond crystal radiation damage tests with the van de graf just because the diamonds are so thin that any relativistic electron beam is equivalent.  At 2 MeV the electrons would only penetrate a few mm into the lead glass, so it might not be as effective a way to learn about lead glass as it would be for diamonds.

Dear Richard and Beni,

what Richard suggest is nice, but I think as I wrote after the calo
meeting a problem related to the radiation hardness is how good can we
cure the crystals and do we come back after each curing to the same
crystal behavior/transparency.

Richard suggested a test in Connecticut at the machine of his university.
We could damage the crystals several time and cure than measure their
transparency. Richard I misplaced the mail you send me some time ago what
machine your university has.

I have also the following questions. how critical is the size of the
crystals, could we look in getting some radiation hard crystals from
Hermes just for the center of the fcal.

I think this is a problem we should address really soon.

bye bye elke

Beni,

In addition to Elton's list, I would like to add the study of radiation
damage. The run should include some plan to increase the beam intensity
for well-defined periods to quantify the rate of degradation and the
effectiveness of various curing strategies.
